Knitting with needles. Knit stitch and purl stitch.

  • Knitting with needles. Knit stitch and purl stitch.

    Basic stitches in knitting.

    Casting on stitches.

A sufficiently long thread is unwound from the ball (approximately twice the width of the knitting). The folded thread is placed on its own ends so that two loops emerge. The second end of the thread should go from the ball. The front loop is pulled through the second with a needle. The thread is pulled. The thread from the ball is placed on the index finger towards itself, the other end of the thread - its own on the thumb. The outer thread of the thumb is lifted with a needle and the inner thread is pulled from the index finger through the resulting loop. The thread is pulled. In this way, the required number of stitches is cast on. The stitches are pulled evenly, without tightening too much.

    Knit stitch.

When knitting a knit stitch the yarn remains on the other side of the knitting. The right needle is inserted into the knit stitch to the direction of knitting (i.e. behind the right knit (V) leg), the knitting yarn is hooked and the knit stitch is pulled out. This is how to knit from the knit stitch.

The knit stitch, when knitting from the purl stitch.

The thread remains on the other side of the knitting, and the right needle is used to hook the upper yarn of the knit and pull the knitting yarn.

    Purl stitch.

The working yarn is held in front of the fabric. The right needle is inserted in the direction of knitting, and the working yarn is brought under the right needle to form the stitch.

Knit stitch worked through the stitch below.

The right needle is inserted into the stitch from the previous row, the working yarn is pulled through, and the new stitch is slipped off the left needle. The upper stitch drops down, creating a yarn over.

    Twisted purl stitch.

The working yarn is held in front of the fabric. The right needle is inserted into the stitch against the direction of knitting, catching the back (lower) leg of the stitch. It is important to pay attention to how the working yarn is drawn through: it is wrapped over the right needle and pulled through the stitch.
